This piece was originally inspired by the recent coming of Autumn here in New Orleans. I went bike riding on the North Shore of Lake Ponchitrain where it is about 10 degrees cooler, and here the live oaks are beginning to shed their leaves exposing their incredible undulating skeletal structure.
As I blew up the image of the live oak onto my work surface of two book covers I had glued together I began to notice that the shapes I was left with resembled a map. There were the small parcels of wetland and swamp created by the flow of the Mississippi that make up the coast directly to the south and east and fan out into the Gulf of Mexico. This place on our map of Louisiana is home to a diverse set of creatures. Pelicans, Herons, Alligators,Fisherman, Shrimpers, Ship Builders, and Oil Companies. A drunkards map penned by the mighty Mississippi, a place of natural beauty and bewilderment.
